Bennett to lead England Nines team

Wayne Bennett has been appointed coach of the England Nines team for the upcoming World Cup Nines tournament in Sydney.

12 teams will contest the tournament at the newly-opened Bankwest Stadium on 18 and 19 October.

Craig Richards will lead the women’s team, who will participate in a four-team tournament over the same weekend.

RFL rugby director Kevin Sinfield said: “We’re excited by the prospect of the Downer World Cup Nines in Sydney, and both our men’s and women’s teams are determined to put up a good showing in what promises to be a great occasion for the international game.

“As the head coaches of our men’s and women’s teams, it’s fitting that Wayne and Craig take charge of the England teams in the Nines – and a measure of how seriously we’re taking the tournaments.”

Men’s Tournament: Australia, Cook Islands, England, Fiji, France, Lebanon, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, USA, Wales.

Women’s Tournament: Australia, England, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea.
