Former NSW star and champion boxer comes out of retirement, age 43

A former rugby league star and boxer in Australia, who played State of Origin for New South Wales in the 1990s, is set to return to the field of play after 19 years away from the game.

43 year old Anthony Mundine hasn’t played rugby league since walking away from the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2000 and has gone on to have a highly successful boxing career, in which he held both the WBA super middleweight and IBO middleweight titles.

Now, after registering to play with Matraville Tigers in South Sydney, Mundine was confident of handling of physical demands of the sport again along with taking the opportunity to mentor some young players coming through.

“I love the game and I’m a different beast. My body hasn’t been beaten up because I quit footy 20 years ago. The contact doesn’t worry me. This is also a nice opportunity to mentor a few kids,” he said.
