Reports – Allerdale formally pulls out as World Cup host

Reports in West Cumbria suggest that Allerdale Council has informed organisers of the 2021 World Cup that the region will not be able to host matches at the tournament.

The Times and Star’s Federica Bedendo reports that the discussion has taken place following last week’s decision by the Council to push back plans for the construction of a new stadium.

Bedendo writes: “Allerdale council has officially informed the organisers of the Rugby League World Cup that it will not be able to host the tournament in 2021.”

Council leader Marion Fitzgerald, added: “We are naturally disappointed the World Cup will not be able to come to the area now and understand the excitement and benefits it would’ve brought.

“However, it is important we get a decision of this scale right for every person in Allerdale and fully consider the business case for a new facility.”
