Rimmer denies Child is being punished

RFL chief executive Ralph Rimmer has denied that James Child’s appointment to a Champonship fixture this weekend is punishment for poor performance.

Child took charge of last Saturday’s heated clash between Catalans and Warrington, but this week drops down to officiate Widnes v Toulouse, and the decision prompted an angry reaction from Phil Clarke.

But Rimmer told TotalRL.com’s Aaron Bower: “James is not being punished, not whatsoever.

“James was involved in what was a very tough game to officiate.

“But like every game he and the rest of our Grade 1 match officials take charge of, he then comes under a review.

“It’s a thorough process but that’s not to say he’s being punished for what happened on Saturday.”
