After turning in a magnificent performance on his return to Headingley to inspire a 32-16 win over Leeds for Hull KR, Danny McGuire received high praise from head coach Tony Smith for his efforts.
McGuire shrugged off a calf injury to take to the Headingley turf for the time in his career and tormented his old side having a hand in a number of tries.
“He’s my type of player. He’s great to watch and it was like turning back the clock,” he said.
“Not only did it look good – I was off the field watching and it made me reminisce about some of what he’s done in years before – but some of my experienced players were saying ‘God, Danny was riding us all and talking the whole way through that game’ and that you could tell it meant a lot to him.
“He was not only doing that, but talking it up and getting the best out of other people, which is what good leaders, half-backs and pros do.”
