Following several months of planning, RLNews.co.uk launched on 1st October 2018.
The website was established and is managed by Tom Alderson and Tom Coates.
Alderson is a reporter for League Express and reporter-commentator for BBC Radio Leeds, while Coates is a reporter and writer for League Express, League Weekly and Rugby League World.
When we discussed the idea of creating our own Rugby League news website, the most important factor was that we didn’t want the site to become a duplicate of what is already out there, so the premise of RLNews.co.uk quickly developed.
As you have hopefully seen during our first month, the aim of RLNews.co.uk is to wrap up the news, views and best of social media and package the content in a clean and accessible way.
During October, we published 389 articles covering everything from the international game through to League 1.
But we recognise that people’s time is valuable, so RLNews.co.uk is designed to be consumed quickly – whether you’re on the train to work, waiting in a queue at the post office or just relaxing in front of the TV.
We also recognise that Rugby League supporters get their news from a variety of sources, and so our content is drawn from regional newspapers across the UK, official club channels, alongside the big stories breaking on social media and in the printed press.
Our articles are concise and informative, and we always name our source and include a link to the full story, so that readers can click through should they wish.
So far, an average of 5% of visitors to the site have clicked through to view the original article.
During our first month, we attracted almost 13,000 views, including nearly 8,000 unique visitors – and we have big plans for further expansion.
As we head into our second month, you’ll see more original content to complement our news output, but we will remain committed to our stated goal of wrapping up the sport’s news and content and serving it on a clean, easy-to-use platform.
