South Sydney Rabbitohs and Great Britain coach Wayne Bennett has confirmed that one of the Burgess brothers will not be at the club next season.

Speculation has been rife for months linking George Burgess with a move away from Redfern, with Brisbane, Parramatta and even a move to Super League being tossed up as potential options for the front rower.

Following his nine match ban for a second successive eye gouge charge, Bennett has now confirmed that the 27 year old will play elsewhere in 2020, but was quick to clarify the decision had been made way before his recent on field issues.

“George won’t be here next year. That was determined a long time ago and long before anything else happened,” he told NRL.com.

“I hope he stays in the NRL because he’s got a lot to offer but we have a salary cap and we just can’t get up to the figure he wants but he’s a wonderful player and a good bloke to have around.”
