South Sydney Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett insisted there would be no automatic recall for George Burgess despite his lengthy suspension coming to an end.

Burgess was given a nine match ban for eye gouging against the Wests Tigers earlier in the year and will serve the final week of the suspension for the last week of the regular season against arch rivals Sydney Roosters.

However, the Rabbitohs boss admitted he would not necessarily pick the hulking England prop, who will head to Wigan next season, for the business end of the season just because he is available.

“No one is an automatic selection, he told the Canberra Times.

“We will see where it is at, how we are playing on Thursday night and who is doing what.

“He’s keen to go of course. George says he is feeling good, why wouldn’t you be after eight weeks?

“But we have had a lot of guys doing the job since he has been away and we have to get through Thursday night.”
