Reports in Australia state that former Leeds Rhinos head coach Dave Furner is now firmly in the mix to be appointed to a new major coaching role from next season.

After it was previously speculated that Newcastle Knights were set to announce a deal with Sydney Roosters assistant Adam O’Brien to take over from the departed Nathan Brown, it now appears that Furner has not only being interviewed by the club, but was interviewed before O’Brien, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

The Australian was sacked by Leeds after 14 games in charge and returned home earlier this season. He is now one of four candidates, including O’Brien, to take over the reigns in the Hunter Valley, with a decision still to be reached by the board of directors.
