Wigan Today’s Phil Wilkinson is reporting that two of Wigan’s first team squad are set to join Leigh Centurions on loan for the 2020 season. Wilkinson writes: “A picture posted on social media showed the duo – both under contract with the Warriors – in pre-season training with the Centurions’ senior squad. Their departure from Wigan won’t come as a surprise, given both Woods and Mullen were not given squad numbers when the list was revealed.”
Tony Smith is fully aware that the drastic changes to his playing squad will not guarantee an upturn in fortunes for the club, but insists having a younger team is the way to go. “If you keep trying the same things you’ll keep getting the same results. There’s no guarantee on the way we are going, but rather than have an older team, we want young, fresh and ambitious faces and we want competition for places,” he told Hull Daily Mail’s James O’Brien.
Anthony Minchiello believes that young star Latrell Mitchell must try and follow the blueprint left by Greg Inglis as he seeks a move to fullback away from Sydney Roosters. Minichiello told AAP: You do the most running in the team and you need to be organising under pressure. Latrell’s a big body. And for us, it didn’t work. He’d be the same mould as the way GI played his fullback role. GI was, at times, very devastating… so Latrell can definitely work there.”
Hull Daily Mail’s James O’Brien reports that Hull KR had the opportunity to sign Toronto half back Ryan Brierley, but opted not to explore a deal. As originally reported in League Weekly: “The Robins were keen on a move for the half-back, who seems likely to leave the Canadian outfit before the start of the Super League season. However, Tony Smith’s side appear to have passed up on the chance to sign the former Leigh Centurions and Huddersfield Giants man.”
