Fiji came out on top 22-20 over Papua New Guinea in a thrilling encounter in Christchurch to secure a place in Pool A of the 2020 Oceania Cup.

The Bati opened the scoring through Tui Kamikamica before the Kumuls hit back with a converted try to Leeds Rhinos star Rhyse Martin.

Fiji went in front just before half time thanks to a Brayden Wiliame try off the back of a blistering Maika Sivo break before PNG capitalised on a Fiji error to level matters through Watson Boas.

Martin added a penalty to see the Kumuls lead 14-12 at half time but Fiji hit the front three minutes after the resumption as Penrith man mountain Viliame Kikau powered over on the left.
