Former Workington Town and Whitehaven head coach Ged Stokes is in critical condition in a hospital in South Africa.
Stokes, who is the father of England cricket World Cup winner and 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Ben, was taken ill in Johannesburg.
Ben has been granted permission to leave the camp to be at his father’s bedside and will miss training ahead of their first Test against South Africa, which starts on Boxing Day.
A statement on the England and Wales Cricket Board read: “Ben Stokes’s father, Ged, was admitted to hospital on Monday in Johannesburg after suffering a serious illness. He remains in a critical condition.
“The all-rounder will not be at England’s training session at SuperSport Park this afternoon so that he can be at his father’s bedside.
“The England and Wales Cricket Board, with the support of Ben and his family, request that the media and public respect Ben and his family’s privacy at this time.”
