The Latrell Mitchell saga is finally over after the New South Wales star put pen to paper on an initial one-year contract with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The future of the 22-year-old was the topic of constant speculation all through the off-season with a number of NRL clubs showing an interest in the Australia international.

The saga has now been completed as he has agreed to join the Bunnies on a one-year deal with the club holding an option in their favour for the 2021 season.

Mitchell was finally cleared to join the Bunnies after Sydney Roosters agreed to grant him an immediate release from his current contract.

The talented back has played four times for the Kangaroos since 2018 and has won the NRL Grand Final on two occasions while at the Roosters.

Rabbitohs General Manager of Football Shane Richardson told the club website: “He has the ability to be one of the best players in the world and from our discussions with him he understands that it’s going to take a lot of hard work and effort for him to be at his best consistently and to reach his full potential.

“He will get that opportunity at the Rabbitohs, working with some wonderful mentors here in Wayne (Bennett), Jason (Demetriou), Ben (Hornby), Greg (Inglis), John (Sutton) and Sam (Burgess), and we’re really looking forward to seeing Latrell at his peak wearing the famous cardinal and myrtle jersey that so many greats of the game have worn before him.

“He understands The Rabbitoh Way and what it means to represent the Rabbitohs. He has a family connection to our Club with his father Matt having played here, his family are South Sydney supporters, and we’re looking forward to welcoming him and his young family to the Rabbitohs this year.

“He is a very proud Indigenous man, a young leader in the Indigenous community and we know that he will be of great support to Souths Cares and its programs in the Indigenous community.

“Things in the player market changed recently which saw us move into a position to be able to bring him to our Club, and for him to make us his club of choice.

“We’re very excited that this opportunity has come to fruition and our Members should be equally as enthusiastic about having a player of Latrell’s ability joining our ranks.”
