One of St Helens in form front rowers will miss the rest of the season after suffering a horrific injury nearly two weeks ago.

Young prop Matty Lees suffered an impact injury likened to that seen in car crash victims against Leeds the week before Wembley and had to have surgery on a leaking intestine shortly after.

The 21 year old is recovering, but had to go back into hospital as surgeons struggled to find the route cause of the issue, and he will now miss the rest of the year as a result of the injury.

“Initially it took forever to find the problem, but it was all the way round his bowel because the impact had hit him that hard,” head coach Justin Holbrook said.

“The surgeon said that the only time they see injuries like that is through a car crash. They literally had to take it all out (the intestines) and find out where the leak was.

“It is unlikely we will see him again this season.”
