Wigan Warriors scrum-half Jarrod Sammut self funded his own flight to represent Malta last month,
Malta Rugby League revealed on their Facebook site that the former London Broncos star took the decision to fund the 35000km round trip in order to honour his Maltese heritage.
Just one day after Wigan’s Super League season came to end, Sammut flew to Sydney as the Malta Knights took on Italy.
Sammut put in a man-of-the-match performance as the Knights defeated Italy 23-20 at the Harvey Shepard Oval.
When asked why he did it, the 32-year-old said: “This team means a lot. The things you do for your heritage.”
