Richard Agar believes Luke Gale will benefit from the “couple of whacks” he took on Boxing Day against Wakefield.

The match marked Gale’s debut since signing for Leeds and his first playing appearance in 14 months.

Agar said: “He’s taken a couple of whacks, which initially has a scary feel, but he came through those whacks, crumpled under a couple of tackles, but I almost think that builds his confidence back up.

“He’ll gain a lot from Boxing Day.”

Gale was withdrawn in the closing stages of the contest, but Agar says this was to allow other players a chance to feature, rather than as an injury precaution.

“I think he’d been talking himself into 40 minutes, 50 minutes, but he could have done the 80 with his eyes shut.

“We took him off towards the end to get some other players back on and have a look at some different combinations.”

Agar added: “I thought he looked really good to say he’s had 12 months, but the game also gave us chance to build on some combinations and give us a platform to strengthen in the coming weeks.

“We were very tentative with him at first, but week by week we’ve built it up.”
