This coming week, RL News launches its partnership with Axate.

Axate works with publishers to help readers access articles on a casual basis, without the need for a subscription.

We’re really excited to get going, but we understand our regular readers might have questions, including the one in the headline.

Well, the straightforward answer is that you don’t have to – but we hope you consider it.

RL News will continue to provide the latest news, comment and gossip to you for free, and we’ll still package up the best of the day’s news in our Daily Wrap section.

But you will see more original and exclusive content published in the coming weeks, including interviews and insight from established journalists, international stakeholders, players, coaches, and young writers making their way in the sport.

For these articles, we will charge 20p for 24 hours’ access.

For that 20p, not only will you get access to the full piece; you’ll also unlock our entire library of premium content for 24 hours.

And here’s the best bit – the revenue raised will help RL News pay more writers to deliver even more exclusive content.

Since Tom Alderson and I launched RL News in October 2018, every penny we’ve raised in advertising revenue has been re-invested in the site. And that’s not about to change.

We recently used some of the money we’ve made to set on our first paid reporter, established a partnership with one of the sport’s leading photography agencies and revamped the site with a new look and feel.

Hopefully you’ve already noticed the differences, and recognise what we’re trying to achieve.

We’re huge admirers of what longer-established websites like TotalRL.com, LoveRugbyLeague.com and SeriousAboutRL.com have built, but, like them, we are constantly exploring ways to make what we do financially sustainable.

We run adverts, served by Google, and have another partnership with a bookmaker, but the last thing we want to do is bombard you with pop-ups, videos and other items that slow down your browsing and interrupt your experience.

But, like our colleagues across Rugby League’s online media, we want to make more quality Rugby League writing available online.

And that’s where Axate comes in.

There are no subscriptions, no monthly commitments – or any commitments at all, for that matter – just a one-off payment of 20p for 24 hours.  You don’t need to pay every day – just when you want to read.

And the process is dead easy.

When you first view a locked article on RL News, you’ll see the text is covered with an explanation about Axate, and a register button.

Click or touch it and you will find instructions guiding you through the process of setting up an Axate account.

This short and hassle-free process takes no longer than two minutes to complete and requires minimal personal data – just your name, email address and a payment method.

Once you’ve topped up your wallet, you’re ready to go.

We encourage you to give it a try, to let us know what you think, and to be a part of RL News’ exciting next chapter.
